What began as a community vision in 1899 is now San Joaquin County’s largest medical center. St. Joseph’s Medical Center has grown from a 25-bed community hospital into a regional leader with 355 beds, nearly 900 physicians and 2,300 dedicated employees.

Recognized year after year for safety and excellence, St. Joseph’s Medical Center offers advanced specialties and services close to home. To help meet the growing needs of the San Joaquin community, construction is now underway on the Cortopassi Tower, a multi-phase expansion that will add 144 patient beds, a new 10-room surgical suite, an expanded emergency department, a new parking structure and two additional helipads. For more than 125 years, patients and families have turned to us for care rooted in compassion and humankindness.

Frequently asked questions

Visitors are a valued part of our patients’ support system, and your safety is important to us. Visiting hours are 9 a.m.–9 p.m. For the safety and comfort of patients, visitors must be 16 or older. All visitors must have a valid ID, and only one visitor is allowed per patient room. Masks are optional. Please wash your hands often and avoid visiting if you’re sick. Wear your visitor badge at all times and remain in the patient room when visiting.

Preregistration is not required, but it can help make the process easier. By providing your information ahead of time, you may save time and reduce stress on the day of your appointment or admission. While we do not currently offer online preregistration, our admitting team is here to help.

Please have these items with you when you call:

  • Your insurance identification card

  • Procedure date and time, or expected delivery date

  • Type of procedure (such as knee replacement or hernia repair surgery)

  • Personal contact information

  • OB provider (for maternity patients)

St. Joseph’s Medical Center offers spiritual care for patients and families of all faiths and traditions. Certified chaplains are available daily to provide emotional and spiritual support and can help patients connect with their own pastor or spiritual adviser. 

Please tell your nurse if you wish to speak with a chaplain or call (209) 467-6547. Our chapel, located off the main lobby next to the gift shop, is open 5 a.m.–9 p.m., and a 24-hour Meditation Room is available on the second floor of the Patient Pavilion.

Explore spiritual care

Our California Street Café serves fresh meals and convenient snacking options. We offer a variety of choices, from build-your-own salads to grilled entrees. The café is located on the first floor of the hospital and is open daily for public dining from 6:30 a.m.-7 p.m.

The Cortopassi Tower will add 144 patient beds, including 120 general acute care beds and 24 intensive care unit (ICU) beds. This expansion will increase the hospital’s capacity to meet the needs of the San Joaquin community. The multi-phase project will also modernize the hospital’s facilities and infrastructure. It will include a new 10-room surgical suite, an expanded emergency department that increases capacity from 66 to 82 beds, a new parking structure and two helipads.

Volunteers are an important part of St. Joseph’s Medical Center, sharing compassion in more than 30 service areas, from greeting visitors to assisting patients. Volunteers must be at least 16 years old and complete a health screening, background check, orientation and training, with a weekly commitment for six months or more.
