Five CommonSpirit Health hospitals are ranked among the nation’s best for their excellence in upholding quality standards across several areas of patient care, according to The Leapfrog Group’s 2022 Top Hospitals Award. The Leapfrog Group is a nonprofit national watchdog organization founded by a group of employers and other purchasers focused on health care safety and quality. The highest performing hospitals on the Leapfrog Hospital Survey are recognized annually with the prestigious Leapfrog Top Hospital award.

At CommonSpirit Health, Dignity Health Sequoia Hospital in Redwood City, CA and CHI Memorial Hospital in Chattanooga, TN received recognition in the general hospital category. Dignity Health St. Elizabeth Community Hospital in Red Bluff was recognized as a top rural hospital out of only 13 nationwide. Dignity Health Mercy General Hospital in Sacramento, CA, and Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle WA, part of Virginia Mason Franciscan Health, were recognized as top teaching hospitals out of only 58 nationwide.

Top Hospitals have better systems in place to prevent medication errors, higher quality on maternity care and lower infection rates, among other laudable qualities. Hospitals must have received an “A” Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade in the most recent round of scoring to be eligible for the Top Hospital award. The award is not given to a set number of hospitals, but rather, to the teaching, general, rural, and children's hospitals that meet the high standards defined in each year's Top Hospital Methodology.
