Posted in: Announcements

Chicago, Ill.— December 2, 2020—CommonSpirit Health, a national health system serving communities in 21 states, announced that Thomas (Tom) McGinn, MD, MPH has joined the organization as System Executive Vice President of Physician Enterprise. Dr. McGinn is assuming the role that has been held by Bruce Swartz, who retired on November 30, 2020.

“We are lucky to have a physician executive like Dr. McGinn joining our team at this important moment for health care in our country,” said CommonSpirit President and Chief Operating Officer Marvin O’Quinn. “As the health care landscape evolves and we continue to navigate the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s critical that we advance highly coordinated and integrated care across the continuum of health services. Dr. McGinn’s experience and vision will be invaluable for CommonSpirit’s physicians, our patients and our communities.”

As a practicing internal medicine physician, physician leader, widely published clinical researcher, and nationally recognized expert in evidence-based medicine, Dr. McGinn previously served as the deputy physician-in-chief and senior vice president of physician network operations at Northwell Health. While there, he was also the founding chair and professor at the department of medicine at the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra University/Northwell. Prior to joining Northwell, Dr. McGinn served as chief of the division of general internal medicine at Mount Sinai Medical Center.

As System Executive Vice President of Physician Enterprise, Dr. McGinn will be responsible for the executive leadership and strategic direction of the Physician Enterprise’s clinical and business operations throughout the 21 states CommonSpirit serves in alignment with the organization’s mission, vision and values. Dr. McGinn will report to O’Quinn.

“I am excited and honored to join an organization like CommonSpirit Health that is committed to expanding access to high-quality affordable care, championing health equality, and providing innovative care in the communities we serve,” said Dr. McGinn. “I look forward to partnering with our physicians, advanced practice providers, and our colleagues across the nation to further build and strengthen our provider networks and to ensure that our clinicians have the resources and support they need to provide the highest levels of patient care across the continuum.”

CommonSpirit Health’s Physician Enterprise represents more than 5,800 employed providers, 1,100 ambulatory care sites, and 21 Value-Based Organizations. Its medical groups, physician networks, and population health work are at the core of CommonSpirit Health’s efforts to expand access to primary and preventative care, advocate for those who are poor and vulnerable, and transition to a value-based and coordinated care approach that builds healthier communities and keeps health care affordable. CommonSpirit is a leader among the nation’s value-based health systems with nearly 2.6 million attributed patients under public and private value-based agreements.

Dr. McGinn earned his bachelor’s degree from Creighton University, his medical degree from SUNY Downstate College of Medicine in Brooklyn, and completed his residency in internal medicine at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine/Bronx Municipal Hospital Center. He also received a Master of Public Health from Columbia University.
