Alessandro Attilio Castellarin, MD

Dr. Castellarin graduated first in his class from the University of Verona School of Medicine in Verona, Italy. Following his ophthalmology training, he completed an ophthalmology residency summa cum laude and then became an instructor of ophthalmology at the Verona School of Medicine. In addition to working in a clinical practice, Dr. Castellarin was a primary investigator in the Verona Diabetes Study.After several years of research and teaching in Italy, Dr. Castellarin moved to the United States where he completed a general surgery internship at St. Barnabas Medical Center. Then, during an additional ophthalmology residency at the University of Medicine and Dentistry in Newark , New Jersey, Dr. Castellarin was chosen to be chief resident. He was also presented with the Alfonse Cinotti Award in recognition of his academic and professional excellence as an ophthalmology resident. Dr. Castellarin received his vitreoretinal fellowship training at Emory University with pioneer surgeon, Dr. Thomas Aaberg.Dr. Castellarin has recently been nationally recognized as the top retina fellow. He was presented with the prestigious Ronald M. Michels Fellowship Award for his contributions to vitreoretinal research and surgery. He was also honored with a National Eye Institute Travel Grant during his work at Emory University. His research interests include diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration and retinal pigment epithelium transplantation. Dr. Castellarin has also been involved in several national multicenter clinical trials and results of his work have been published in highly acclaimed journals such as Ophthalmology, Retina, the American Journal of Ophthalmology, the British Journal of Ophthalmology and The Lancet. Dr. Castellarin is a diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology, a member of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology and the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

As vitreoretinal specialists, we provide comprehensive medical and surgical treatment for all disorders of the retina, macula and vitreous. We focus on the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of these conditions. Many abnormalities of the retina and vitreous may cause visual loss. These disorders include macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachment, macular holes, macular edema and epiretinal membranes. Our practice has multiple locations throughout Central California to serve our patients.
