In life’s most vulnerable passages — illness, grief, birth, recovery — spiritual care can be a healing presence. At CommonSpirit, our chaplains accompany patients, families and caregivers with compassion, deep listening and reverence. Whether you seek prayer, quiet reflection or someone to help hold your fear or hope, we are here to walk with you.
Our chaplains focus on the whole person rather than on just one’s faith and religion. In fact, you do not need to belong to any faith tradition to benefit from spiritual care. We honor the spiritual dignity of all people, in every care setting, across every stage of life.
Spiritual care is the practice of meeting people where they are — emotionally, spiritually and existentially. Our chaplains are trained to accompany you in moments of pain, uncertainty and transition. They are not here to fix or advise, but to be present.
This kind of presence is a sacred act of compassion: to sit with suffering, to honor joy, to bear witness to grief and to meaning. Whether you're facing a serious diagnosis or simply seeking connection, spiritual care welcomes your questions and your silence alike.
Spiritual care can be a comfort at any moment, but it is especially meaningful during times of illness, crisis, decision-making or loss. Many people ask for a chaplain when navigating a diagnosis, preparing for surgery, grieving a loved one or searching for clarity and peace. Others simply need a space to speak their truth.
Chaplains are present in many CommonSpirit hospitals and care centers, but availability varies by location. Please ask a care team member if spiritual care is available at your site.
CommonSpirit provides care across a broad continuum — from hospitals to clinics, senior living to home health. While chaplains are most present in hospital settings, our mission calls us to nurture spiritual well-being wherever people are served.
In some settings, spiritual care may include virtual visits, sacred rituals, family conversations or moments of reflection for staff. No matter the setting, we are companions on the journey — lifting up dignity, love and meaning in every encounter.
Spiritual care begins with deep listening, courageous presence and a compassionate heart. Through Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE), we prepare future chaplains to meet people where they are — in moments of crisis, transition, and healing.
CommonSpirit sponsors accredited CPE programs in hospitals and medical centers across the country. These programs, offered in-person and virtually, provide intensive, hands-on spiritual care training grounded in theological reflection, self-awareness and interfaith learning. Our students come from diverse backgrounds and faith traditions, and go on to serve in hospitals, congregations, hospice, the military, and beyond. For more information contact our CPE Centers:
