Academic and Faculty Affairs

The Academic and Faculty Affairs department focuses on enhancing collaboration between educational and health system partners, promoting clinical quality, and accelerating research and scholarship.

Our Academic and Faculty Affairs team fosters collaboration, drives clinical excellence and accelerates research and scholarship. By leveraging shared experiences and data-driven decisions, we align with our core values to develop talent, attract experts and support our Centers of Excellence.

We are broadening access to health care careers and medical education by providing scholarships that help break down financial barriers for aspiring professionals. This effort includes a program at Creighton University that offers 100 full-tuition scholarships to underrepresented students of color, as well as $3 million in financial support awarded through the CommonSpirit Equity Impact Scholarship to empower diverse health care professionals.

Additionally, we are fostering opportunities through academic partnerships with Baylor College of Medicine, Creighton University and Morehouse School of Medicine, paving the way for the next generation of health care leaders.

  • Baylor College of Medicine:  Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center in Houston, Texas, has a robust academic partnership with Baylor College of Medicine, providing hands-on training for medical, physician assistant and nurse anesthesia students. These students gain experience in various specialties, including general surgery, pediatric anesthesia and neurosurgery. With the world’s largest cardiac catheterization lab and a leading transplant center, Baylor St. Luke’s is also a pioneer in advanced treatments and medical research, with Baylor physicians conducting groundbreaking clinical trials and other studies to improve patient care.

  • Creighton University: Creighton College of Medicine has training sites in Omaha, Nebraska, and Phoenix, Arizona, in affiliation with CHI Health and St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center. This partnership brings together academic excellence and high-quality health care to benefit both patients and medical professionals. As a teaching hospital affiliated with Creighton University, these fully operational training campuses serve as the primary site for medical education, training and research, fostering an environment where students, residents and fellows gain hands-on experience while learning from skilled healthcare professionals.

  • Morehouse School of Medicine: Morehouse is one of America’s leading educators of primary care physicians. Though there are 155 accredited medical schools in the United States, the majority of the nation’s Black physicians are trained at Morehouse School of Medicine. In collaboration with Morehouse School of Medicine, CommonSpirit launched the More in Common Alliance, a 10-year, $100 million initiative to expand undergraduate and graduate medical education and train the next generation of culturally competent health clinicians and researchers.

We offer rewarding opportunities for physicians and advanced practice providers in diverse settings—from community clinics to nationally recognized Centers of Excellence. Across every CommonSpirit location, you’ll find a supportive, collaborative environment where team members are dedicated to delivering top-quality care and championing the practice of humankindness.

We believe our nursing care reflects who we are. That's why we’re dedicated to helping newly licensed and new-to-practice nurses transition into their careers confidently and competently. Our National Nurse Residency Program (NNRP) offers a structured, evidence-based approach to orienting nurses to their roles and integrating them into our organization.

Through a blend of in-person and virtual education, new nurses receive the tools and support needed to build critical thinking, make evidence-based decisions, manage stress and grow as leaders. This comprehensive, competency-based curriculum includes mentorship from experienced preceptors and the guidance of the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), with innovative, best-practice methods.

The NNRP accelerates nursing skills by providing intensive learning, hands-on experiences and dedicated support throughout a nurse’s first year. New RNs receive a full clinical orientation and are enrolled in a 12-month transition-to-practice program, with cohort start dates offered regularly. We’re here to support our nurses every step of the way.

Our Pharmacy Residency Program provides an immersive, hands-on experience designed to develop highly skilled and compassionate pharmacists ready to excel in a dynamic healthcare environment. Residents are part of a multidisciplinary team, working closely with experienced pharmacists, physicians and health care professionals across our health system.

The program offers a diverse range of learning opportunities, from inpatient and outpatient care to specialty areas such as critical care, oncology, cardiology and infectious disease. Through required rotations, direct patient care experiences and ongoing mentorship, residents deepen your clinical knowledge, enhance your decision-making skills and build confidence in evidence-based practice.

With a commitment to professional growth and a supportive learning environment, our pharmacy residency program prepares pharmacists for a successful and impactful career.

The CommonSpirit Health Research Institute (CSHRI) provides participants at 92 care sites across the United States with access to clinical research studies in cancer, neurology and cardiology. By participating in these studies, individuals may gain access to advanced therapies and cutting-edge treatments that aren't yet available to the general public. Throughout the research process, participants are supported by a dedicated team of medical professionals, including physicians, nurses, navigators and research staff, who are committed to ensuring a positive experience.
