Dr. Sheppard is Board Certified in General Surgery and Thoracic Surgery. Currently specializing in minimally invasive surgery for benign and malignant diseases of the chest, lung and mediastinum. Dr. Sheppard became interested in Lung Cancer Screening using CT scans early in his career. Founded and served as the Principal Investigator of Mills-Peninsula Lung Cancer Screening Study 2001-2010 and a contributing International Early Lung Cancer Action Project (IELCAP) Investigator.Dr. Sheppard was involved in the creation and development of the Lung Cancer Screening Program at Alta Bates Summit Medical Center 2015-2021. Published approximately 40 publications in peer reviewed journals including a seminal article on CT screening for lung cancer in NEJM that has been cited by other researchers more than a thousand times.Dr. Sheppard was involved in physician advocacy serving as President of San Mateo County Medical Association, 2004-05, Delegate to California Medical Association HOD 2001-2010 and as a Delegate to the American Medical Association HOD from 2006-2011. Contributing author and ultimately Chair of the Editorial Committee for the San Mateo County Medical Association Bulletin, the physician newsletter of the county medical association. Authored 32 Op-Ed articles.Dr. Sheppard is a Volunteer at The Marine Mammal Center in Marin, providing care for California Sea Lions, Elephant Seals, Fur Seals and Sea Otters on Thursday nights since 2008. Hobbies include Travel, SCUBA diving and underwater photography.
