Rachel H Mathis, MD, FACS

Rachel Mathis, MD, sees patients ages 18 and over at the Center for Weight Loss Surgery at Saint Joseph East. She has been practicing medicine since 2010, and is a Fellow of the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Mathis holds several leadership roles, including division chief of General Surgery and division chief of Bariatric Surgery, both at Saint Joseph Health in Lexington; she also serves on the Community Practice Committee and Continuing Education Committee for the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons. She chose to specialize in bariatric surgery because it requires long-term follow-up and relationship-building with patients, describing her approach to patient care as “rooted in compassion, evidence-based practice and individualized treatment.” She strives to support and empower her patients through every step. “I take the time to truly listen to my patients, understand their goals, and tailor a care plan that reflects both the latest clinical research and their unique needs.” Dr. Mathis received an undergraduate degree from Yale University and a medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia. Her residency in general surgery was at Inova Fairfax Medical Campus in Virginia, and she served a fellowship in advanced laparoscopic and bariatric surgery at Lahey Clinic in Massachusetts. Outside of work, Dr. Mathis is an avid soccer fan, and also enjoys reading, learning more about medical and surgical history, traveling, arranging live flowers, watercolor painting and listening to music.
