CommonSpirit one of 42 U.S. Health Systems Chosen to Participate in Multi-Year Research Initiative

CommonSpirit Health has been chosen, alongside 41 other national health systems, by The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) to participate in its pioneering Health Systems Implementation Initiative (HSII).  The multiyear initiative is focused on advancing the integration of comparative clinical effectiveness research results into health care practice.

“CommonSpirit is honored to be selected by PCORI to participate in the HSII initiative to advance evidence-based medicine, accelerate the adoption of research in clinical care, and improve patient outcomes,” said Dr. Thomas McGinn, EVP, Physician Enterprise, CommonSpirit Health. “We look forward to collaborating with other health systems and partners as part of this initiative to bring best-in-class interventions to communities that translate cutting-edge research into real, tangible services and treatments for our patients.”

The translation of new knowledge into beside practice takes an average of 17 years. With more than 1,000 clinics and 140 hospitals across 21 states, CommonSpirit has a proven track record of translating research and medical evidence into clinical standards and management protocols. Commonspirit is currently working on a wide range of implementation initiatives , from management of Hepatitis C, to standardizing risk-based cancer screenings, to transitioning chronic kidney disease diagnosis to the new best practice in eGFR calculations.

“Research plays a critical role in how we improve patient care. We are uniquely positioned to leverage our expertise to support communities that are facing these challenges,” said Vani Nilakantan, PhD, System Vice President of Research at the CommonSpirit Research Institute. “With this effort, the bridge between theory and practical application can be completed.”

PCORI is an independent nonprofit organization whose mission is to fund research that will provide patients, their caregivers and clinicians with the evidence-based information needed to make better-informed health care decisions.
