MOUNT STERLING, Ky. (May 29, 2025) – Saint Joseph Mount Sterling marked a significant milestone with the completion of its 100th orthopedic robotic surgery using the innovative Mako SmartRobotics™ system on Monday, May 5. This achievement highlights the hospital's commitment to enhancing surgical precision and improving patient outcomes in joint replacement procedures.
“Reaching our 100th robotic-assisted surgery is a proud moment for our team and the community we serve,” said John Yanes, president, Saint Joseph Mount Sterling. “Our commitment to integrating advanced technology like Mako SmartRobotics reflects our mission to provide state-of-the-art care close to home. This milestone not only demonstrates our surgical team's expertise but also underscores the trust our patients place in us for their joint replacement needs.”
The Mako SmartRobotics system assists surgeons in achieving greater accuracy during surgery, leading to quicker recovery times and improved range of motion for patients. The first surgery utilizing the Mako system at Saint Joseph Mount Sterling was performed by James Rollins, MD, and the 100th procedure was led by Anup Chattha, MD.
“Joint replacement surgeries performed using the robot have shown quicker results in a patient's postoperative range of motion,” said Dr. James Rollins. “The technology allows us to make highly precise adjustments that simply aren’t possible with traditional methods. This precision helps reduce tissue damage and accelerates recovery, meaning our patients are getting back to their daily activities with less pain and in less time. It's incredibly rewarding to see the positive impact this has on their quality of life.”
“The robot has been an invaluable tool for joint replacement procedures,” said Dr. Anup Chattha.
“This cutting-edge technology allows us to customize each patient's surgery and optimize placement and balance of the implant.”
A celebration, including balloons and cake, was held to honor the 100th patient.
