Cosmetic ear surgery: Overview

Cosmetic ear surgery is done to change the appearance of the ear. It can help fix ears that are misshapen, stick out too far from the head, or have been damaged by an injury. If children have the surgery, they should be at least 5 or 6 years old.

You may be asleep for the procedure, or the area may be numbed. The surgeon makes cuts (incisions) in the ear and reshapes the cartilage that gives the ear its shape. The scars are small and well hidden in the ear.

An overnight hospital stay is not usually needed. Recovery takes about 6 weeks. A special cup may be worn over the ear to protect it while it heals.

The risks of this surgery include swelling, bleeding, and infection.
