What is robot-assisted surgery?

Robot-assisted surgery is a minimally invasive approach that allows surgeons to perform various surgical procedures through small incisions. It uses instruments that are controlled by a surgeon from a console. The robotic system provides a high-definition, 3D view of the surgical site and enables the surgeon to move instruments with precision.

How is robot-assisted surgery done?

During robot-assisted surgery, the surgeon sits at a console, viewing a 3D image of the surgical area. The surgeon manipulates controls that translate their hand, wrist and finger movements into precise movements of surgical instruments attached to robotic arms. These instruments are inserted into the patient through small incisions. A surgical team is present at the operating table to assist, change instruments and manage the robotic system.

Contact your doctor if you experience any of the following after robot-assisted surgery:

  • Fever

  • Increased pain that is not relieved by medication

  • Redness, swelling, or discharge from incision sites

  • Persistent nausea or vomiting

  • Difficulty breathing or chest pain

  • Any other concerning symptoms or changes in your condition
