Xeroderma pigmentosum is a group of rare inherited skin disorders that makes the skin very sensitive to sunlight. The disease stops the body from repairing cell damage caused by ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun.
Skin problems can start soon after birth. Sunburns can happen easily. Skin changes from the sun, like freckles and age spots (sun spots), occur at a young age. Skin cancers are common and appear at younger ages. People with this condition also have a much higher risk for oral cancers. The disease sometimes affects the eyes and hearing. And it may cause delayed development or intellectual disability.
