Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is the unexplainable, sudden death of an infant. While the tragic death of a baby is only amplified by the frustration of not understanding the root cause of SIDS, there are steps you can take to lower your baby’s risk of SIDS.
To protect your baby from SIDS, get regular prenatal care, avoid smoking and secondhand smoke, and ensure your baby sleeps on their back in a crib or bassinet with a firm mattress and no loose items.
Postpartum blues usually happen right after birth to two weeks postpartum. Some women may feel depressed, anxious and upset. Symptoms may include crying for no reason, having trouble eating, sleeping or making decisions. Some women may question their preparedness or be discouraged about new responsibilities.
Postpartum depression can present the same symptoms as the postpartum blues, but do not improve or resolve within two weeks postpartum. There can be more intense feelings, sadness or anxiety that limit daily tasks. These can last between one to three weeks postpartum or up to a year. If you are concerned about your mood, please let your doctor or nurse know.
The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends all women undergo a comprehensive postpartum visit within the first six weeks after birth.
