A sleep study includes an initial examination, overnight monitoring in a comfortable, private room and follow-up care. Our facilities feature queen-size beds, TVs, internet access, and private bathrooms to make you feel at home.
We have a registered polysomnographer (sleep studies specialist) always on staff, and our medical director is board certified in sleep treatment. Our sleep center is accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM), ensuring high standards in care.
Yes, we work closely with specialists in neurology, ear, nose and throat (ENT), respiratory therapy or are registered sleep technologists, respiratory therapists or others who can help accurately diagnose and effectively treat your condition.
You might need a sleep study if you experience chronic snoring, excessive daytime sleepiness, sleep apnea symptoms, or trouble falling asleep or waking up frequently at night.
To schedule a sleep study, please contact our sleep center directly or consult with your primary care physician for a referral.
If left untreated, some sleep disorders may increase the risk of high blood pressure, heart attack or stroke.
In most cases, yes. Your doctor will provide a referral to our sleep center based on your symptoms. Please check with us or your health care provider to confirm.
You’ll need comfortable pajamas, toiletries, a book or device to help you relax and any medications you take on a regular basis.
Most overnight sleep studies last between six and eight hours. Daytime studies for conditions like narcolepsy may require multiple sessions.
If your physician determines that a sleep study is required, you will spend one or two nights in one of our private, comfortable hotel rooms, which simulates the home setting. A nearby room is equipped with sophisticated equipment for monitoring sleep stages, patterns, heart activity, blood oxygen levels and body movement. You may also be asked to stay during the day to help us assess daytime sleepiness.
Many insurance plans cover sleep studies if they are considered medically necessary. Check with your insurance company about coverage.
If a sleep disorder is diagnosed, the team of specialists at the Sleep Center at St. Joseph Health will evaluate the results of your studies and will make recommendations for treatment.
Treatment may include medication, changes in daily habits or work schedules, or a simple nasal mask to relieve snoring and upper airway obstruction. You may be asked to return to the center for a follow-up visit to check your progress.
