CommonSpirit Health to Enhance Chronic and Cardiovascular Care

Innovative partnership strives to address health inequalities and help improve care delivery and outcomes for cardiovascular and neurological health and patients with acute and chronic conditions across the health system.

CommonSpirit Health to Enhance Chronic and Cardiovascular Care

Charlotte, N.C., March 5, 2024 – Premier, Inc.’s PINC AI™ Applied Sciences (PAS) team is partnering with CommonSpirit Health, one of the largest non-profit health systems in the country, in a research effort aimed at gathering clinical and operational insights for a variety of disease states – including cardiovascular, neurological and acute and chronic conditions – to address the social causes of poor health and advance medical care delivery across the system’s footprint.
With a shared emphasis on increasing health equity, the partnership combines PAS’ expertise in research development and CommonSpirit’s national footprint, talent and research infrastructure, to build healthier communities by addressing disparities in research – paving the way for rapid advancements in achieving more equitable health outcomes.

Neurologic and cardiovascular disorders disproportionately affect underserved groups, including racial and ethnic minorities, rural and socioeconomically disadvantaged populations. Key findings of one study conclude that more than 14 neurologic disease areas are affected by health disparities.

Another study highlighting self-reported risk factors for cardiovascular disease indicates that persons with less than a high school education were more likely to smoke and to report that they had been diagnosed with diabetes. Black men had the highest rate of smoking as well as the highest self-reported prevalence of diagnosed diabetes and high blood pressure.

“We’re thrilled to partner with CommonSpirit Health Research Institute and Lloyd H. Dean Institute for Humankindness & Health Justice to co-develop research concepts and innovative real-world solutions that can be scaled nationally,” said Denise Juliano, Group Vice President, PINC AI™ Applied Sciences. “Health inequity continues to be a pervasive problem in the U.S., one which our teams are tackling head on with research that aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the factors contributing to disparities in cardiovascular and neurological care. By combining PAS’ award-winning approach to research and discovery with CommonSpirit’s dedication to providing better access and more equitable outcomes, we believe we can improve the health of communities together.”

“This collaboration between PAS and CommonSpirit is significant, enabling the teams to combine robust real-world data and artificial intelligence-driven research capabilities with a common passion for addressing the social causes of poor health and advancing health justice,” said Vani Nilakantan, Ph.D., System Vice President Research, CommonSpirit Health Research Institute. “We’re excited to conduct game changing clinical research with PAS that we believe will accelerate improvements in health equity and care delivery in the U.S.”
PAS and CommonSpirit Health Research Institute are poised to make significant strides in mitigating health disparities through innovative research, expert guidance and community-driven solutions. The collaboration will focus on:

  • Harnessing innovation, prospective research, expert engagement and new technologies and solutions to advance outcomes in cardiovascular health, neurology and acute and chronic conditions across CommonSpirit’s delivery system.
  • Co-designing novel research concepts with Common Spirit Health Research Institute and the Lloyd Dean Institute for Humankindness and Health Justice based on the needs of the diverse communities and patients the system serves.
  • Convening key stakeholders including subject matter experts, community leaders, patient advocacy groups and others in the development of thought leadership that aims to ensure solutions are informed by data and also reflect the experiences and priorities of the people experiencing healthcare disparities and poor health outcomes related to cardiovascular and neurological causes.
