A decade of experience in Saint Joseph Mount Sterling’s radiology department has not diminished Stevee Caudill’s enthusiasm for her field. She is still amazed by the advancements and modern capabilities improving patient care and imaging technology everyday.
“CT is so fast-paced—we see so many patients, and the MRI imaging is so in-depth, so advanced. That’s very cool to me,” said Caudill, a Multimodality Technologist at Saint Joseph Mount Sterling. The technology-driven changes in her field are exciting, but also challenging, she added: “I can see where I started 10 years ago to where I am now, how much radiology has changed and evolved—it’s pretty remarkable.”
As a student at Morehead State University (MSU), Caudill shadowed in the Mount Sterling hospital’s X-ray unit, but soon also became fascinated with CTs and MRIs. That experience helped “get my foot in the door,” she said. She was hired halfway through her CT/MRI program and went full-time upon graduation—her first job out of college. She has an associate degree in radiologic technology from MSU and a bachelor’s degree in its advanced medical imaging program.
“I love the hospital; the small town feel is nice. Everyone seems like a family. I love the people I work with—I have some really great co-workers that I’m thankful I get to work with each day. All the departments work together,” said Caudill, who was born and raised near Morehead. She and her husband, Lincoln, an attorney, enjoy spending summers at Cave Run Lake and supporting University of Kentucky’s basketball and football teams.
In addition to performing X-rays, MRIs and CT scans, she schedules the imaging for the oncology department. That work was one of the factors cited when she received 2024 Employee of the Year honors for the Mount Sterling hospital. She worked with the oncology department to implement a new process to streamline scheduling scans for those patients, for whom timing is often critical.
“I’m always trying to help,” Caudill said. “I think I’m always motivated by doing something I’ve not done before—if I don’t know how to do something, trying to figure out how to do it so I can be more productive and help people. I’m always up to try something new or learn something.”
She always wanted a health care career, explaining, “I always wanted to give back to the people in the community and be helpful.” She said she enjoys hearing patients’ stories, getting to know those who need regular follow-up imaging, comforting patients when they’re nervous and explaining the procedures to calm them.
“I like that aspect of giving them a positive experience,” Caudill said. “It’s not a great situation that they’re in. When we have them for a CT, X-ray or MRI, we don’t have them for a long time, but if we can make an impact and give them a decent experience, that’s what I try to do. I think a smile goes a long way with people when they’re nervous.”
While she said she loves working directly with patients, she also wants to be a better leader. To that end, she will graduate in May with a master’s degree in health care administration, with help from scholarships and Saint Joseph’s education benefits. “They’ve given me a career, they’ve given me a great work family and they’ve furthered my education. So I’m very thankful,” Caudill said.
“Saint Joseph’s values,” Caudill said, “are my values, too. I want to be an example of what it is to come to Saint Joseph Mount Sterling — to show positivity and try to reflect that patients are first. That’s really important to me, and I know that’s reflective of their values as well.”
