How Regular Checkups Helped One Man Beat Esophageal Cancer

Charlie managed Barrett's esophagus for 25 years before catching cancer early. Hear his story and learn why staying on top of your healthcare matters most.

After living with Barrett’s esophagus for more than 25 years, Charlie’s commitment to regular screenings helped doctors detect esophageal cancer early. Learn more about his story and how CHI St. Vincent Infirmary in Little Rock helped him get lifesaving treatment.

In the 1990s, Charlie was diagnosed with Barrett’s esophagus, a condition that can happen when acid reflux damages the lining of the esophagus. Barrett’s esophagus is a precancerous condition, so Charlie’s doctors put him on medication for his acid reflux and recommended regular scans to check for signs of cancer.

For the next 25 years, Charlie was a model patient, taking his medications as prescribed and never missing an exam. Because of that, when a recent scan revealed a concerning spot, Charlie’s doctors quickly referred him to Sven Hida, MD, with CHI St. Vincent Infirmary in Little Rock. Dr. Hida diagnosed Charlie with esophageal cancer and quickly got him scheduled for surgery. Thanks to Charlie’s diligence in taking care of his health and Dr. Hida’s quick diagnosis, the surgery was a success.

In our latest podcast, we discuss Charlie’s experience managing a chronic condition that could turn deadly at any moment. Charlie shares with us how he felt when he got the diagnosis and what he now tells people about staying on top of their own healthcare. Watch  the full podcast episode here
