Aortic aneurysm screening

Aortic Aneurysm Screening

Who should be screened for an aortic aneurysm?

Screening tests help your doctor look for a condition before symptoms appear. Experts recommend that the following people be screened for aortic aneurysms.

Abdominal aortic aneurysm.

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends a screening test for men who are ages 65 to 75 and have ever smoked.

These men are more likely to have an aneurysm than women or nonsmoking men are.

Some doctors think that other groups should be screened too. Talk to your doctor about whether the benefits of screening would outweigh the risks in your case.

Thoracic aortic aneurysm.

Experts recommend a screening test for thoracic aneurysms for anyone who has a close relative who's had a thoracic aortic aneurysm.
