Diabetes type 2 screening

Diabetes Type 2 Screening

When should adults be screened for type 2 diabetes?

Doctors follow guidelines from experts to decide when to test adults for type 2 diabetes. Talk with your doctor about your risk for type 2 diabetes and how often you need to be tested.

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends testing for prediabetes or type 2 diabetes in people who are age 35 to 70 and who are overweight or have obesity.

The American Diabetes Association recommends testing for diabetes or prediabetes at least every 3 years for adults who are overweight and have one or more other things that put them at risk for type 2 diabetes. These things include having high blood pressure, having a family history of type 2 diabetes, and getting little or no exercise. Everyone should be tested starting at age 35.
