A femoral hernia may cause pain, usually in the groin area. There may be a small bulge in the area. This hernia is sometimes mistaken for an inguinal hernia, which can also occur in the groin.

A femoral hernia (say "FEH-muh-rull HER-nee-uh") happens when there is weakness in the muscle wall of the lower belly, near the upper thigh. Tissue bulges through the area, just below the groin crease. This causes a hernia.
