Why is a fungal culture for skin and nail problems done?

A fungal culture may be done to:

  • Find the cause of red, cracking, scaling, peeling, or blistered skin. For example, the test might be done to check for athlete's foot, a common fungal infection of the skin.
  • Find out if nail problems are caused by a fungus.
  • Find out what type of fungus you may have, so that you get the right treatment.

What do the results of a fungal culture for skin and nail problems mean?

Negative

No fungi are present in the skin or nail scrapings. Other skin tests may be done to find out the cause of the skin or nail problems.

Positive

Fungi are present, and the type of fungus is identified.

Treatment may vary depending on the type of fungus present.
