Why are infants screened for thyroid problems?

Infants are screened for hypothyroidism because it may cause problems with thinking and learning. Every state in the U.S. tests newborns for the condition. If your baby wasn't born in a hospital or if you think your baby may not have been tested, talk to your doctor.
