John A. Campbell, MD

Dr. John A. Campbell is a board-certified family medicine physician and dedicated geriatric specialist with extensive experience in clinical care, medical leadership, and academic education. A graduate of Washington University School of Medicine and the nationally renowned Geriatric Medicine Fellowship Program of Saint Louis University, Dr. Campbell most recently served six years on the faculty of the Marian Family Medicine Residency Program in Santa Maria, California, and he continues to serve as medical director of Dignity Health’s Marian Extended Care Center in Santa Maria. Throughout his career, Dr. Campbell has been a passionate advocate for improving the quality of life and clinical outcomes of older adults. As Chief of Geriatrics at Mercy Hospital in St. Louis, he launched the hospital’s first geriatric consult service and implemented initiatives to make emergency department care more accessible and safe for senior patients. He has also held leadership roles as a medical director for several long-term care and assisted living facilities, where he successfully spearheaded quality improvement initiatives that significantly enhanced patient safety and readmission metrics. A committed educator, Dr. Campbell has served as an assistant clinical professor at both George Washington University and Saint Louis University. He has dedicated much of his career to mentoring medical residents and fellows, sharing his enthusiasm for elder care and expertise in such complex geriatric topics as delirium, fall prevention, dementia, and end-of-life care. His academic contributions include numerous peer-reviewed publications, national presentations, and media appearances. After earning his medical degree from Washington University, he completed his family medicine residency at Mercy Hospital St. Louis, followed by a geriatric fellowship at Saint Louis University. He is a Certified Medical Director (CMD) through the American Medical Directors Association (now known as PALTmed) and a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians (FAAFP). He has been named a “Top Doctor” multiple times by St. Louis Magazine in recognition of his clinical excellence. Dr. Campbell’s work is driven by a commitment to interdisciplinary care and a deep-rooted passion for ensuring that older adults receive compassionate, evidence-based medical treatment across the entire continuum of care.
"As a geriatric specialist, I strive every day to improve the lives of older adults in the community. Whether you are a sprightly 65-year-old pickleball champ or a centenarian with two pages of diagnoses and enough meds to open your own pharmacy, I will work to help you feel better and reach your immediate and long-range goals. I use evidence-based medicine to focus on quality primary care and geriatric syndromes such as falls, dementia, osteoporosis, and polypharmacy, while developing long-term relationships with my patients."
