Dr. Nikolaos A. Diakos is an interventional cardiologist and specialist in heart failure at The Texas Heart Institute Center for Cardiovascular Care. He is recognized for his pioneering of new treatments and devices and his clinical and translational research in the areas of heart failure and mechanical cardiac support.
Dr. Diakos’ professional interests include: interventional cardiology, heart failure, mechanical circulatory support and heart transplantation.
Dr. Diakos earned his medical degree from the University of Athens School of Medicine in Athens, Greece, where he also received his doctoral degree.
He completed a fellowship in translational research at the joint Utah Cardiac Recovery Program/University of Utah Molecular Medicine Program/Eccles Institute of Human Genetics in Salt Lake City, Utah; and his residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Utah. Dr. Diakos also completed a clinical and research fellowship in cardiovascular disease at Tufts Medical Center in Boston, a fellowship in advanced heart failure and transplantation at New York Presbyterian Hospital-Columbia University in New York City, and interventional cardiology training at Montefiore in New York.
Dr. Diakos is certified by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates, the American Board of Internal Medicine in Internal Medicine and Cardiovascular Disease, and the National Board of Echocardiography. He is also a member of the Academic Professional Staff at The Texas Heart Institute.
Dr. Diakos has won nearly a dozen awards for his research, including an award from the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation, a Research Merit Scholarship from the Acute Cardiac Unloading and Recovery Working Group (A-Cure), and numerous awards from the Hellenic Cardiological Society.
