Raymon Grogan, MD, FACS, MS

Dr. Raymon Grogan is a board-certified surgeon specializing in endocrine surgery and thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal, and endocrine pancreas diseases. He is a Professor of Surgery - Surgical Oncology, Section of Endocrine Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine. He is also Chief of Endocrine Surgery at Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center, where he runs the Transoral Endocrine Surgery Program. 

 

Dr. Grogan is one of only a few experts in the United States on Transoral Endocrine Surgery (TES), a novel approach to surgery for both thyroid and parathyroid disease that leaves no visible scar on the neck. Dr. Grogan was one of the first surgeons to perform this operation in the United States, and the first surgeon to perform this operation in Chicago, the Midwest, and Texas. He is also an expert in other forms of minimally invasive thyroid, parathyroid and adrenal surgery. His clinical interests also include: 4-gland exploration; mediastinal exploration; ectopic parathyroid; parathyroid carcinoma; laparoscopic adrenalectomy; open adrenalectomy; bilateral adrenalectomy; and thyroid RFA. 

 

Dr. Grogan’s research interests include the genetics and epidemiology of endocrine diseases; and the relationship between the human microbiome and thyroid disease, for which he was awarded the Paul LoGerfo Research Grant in 2017 from the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons. Dr. Grogan completed undergraduate studies at Emory University in Atlanta and received a Master of Science degree in epidemiology and biostatistics. He then received his medical degree at the University of Miami, in Miami, Florida. He completed a surgical internship and a research fellowship in microvascular surgery at New York University, and his residency in general surgery at Stanford University. He also completed research and clinical fellowships in endocrine surgery at the University of California - San Francisco; and a fellowship in clinical medical ethics at the University of Chicago, where he also received a Master’s degree in Public Health. 

 

Dr. Grogan joined the faculty of the endocrine surgery unit at the University of Chicago where he served as Director of the Endocrine Surgery Research Program, Director of the Endocrine Surgery Fellowship Program, Associate Program Director of the General Surgery Residency Program, and Chair of the Resident Research Advisory committee. Dr. Grogan is the Principal Investigator and founder of the North American Thyroid Cancer Survivorship Study, a longitudinal cohort study of quality of life issues for post-surgery patients that currently has nearly 3,000 participants enrolled. 

 

Dr. Grogan is board-certified by the American Board of Surgery. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons, American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, American Society of Clinical Oncology, Association for Academic Surgery, International Society of Surgery, and International Association of Endocrine Surgeons. Dr. Grogan has been named Top Doctor of Chicago (2017-2019) and Top Doctor of Houston (2019) by Castle Connolly Medical LTD. In addition to English, Dr. Grogan speaks Spanish.
