Talking the Talk: Everyday Equity and the Science of Communication

Objectives: At the conclusion of the session, the participants should be able to:

• Critically evaluate healthcare communication practices, both through self-reflection and through stratified data, to recognize ways such practices may be contributing to disparities.
• Implement changes in how to communicate with marginalized populations, including families with a language for care other than English.
• Propose or participate in system-level changes to decrease communication-based disparities in clinical settings.

Target Audience and Needs: Physicians, residents, fellows, medical students and other healthcare providers across practice areas encounter health care equity issues such as health disparities, social determinants of health, cultural/linguistic competencies, and social justice. The series aims to broaden the awareness of learners in these topic areas provide strategies to address these issues as they arise.

Educational Methods: Educational methods will include lectures, case presentations, literature review, and panel discussion.

Activity Evaluation: Participants may be asked to complete a session evaluation.

Accreditation/Credit Designation: Baylor College of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

Baylor College of Medicine designates this live activity for a maximum of 1.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
