CommonSpirit Health releases FY2026 year-end financial results

CHICAGO – Oct. 1, 2026 – CommonSpirit Health’s financial results for fiscal year 2026 reflect strong volumes and improvements in key areas like length-of-stay, offset by a challenging payer mix.

CommonSpirit reported revenues of $42.4 billion for fiscal year 2026, which ended June 30, an increase of 8.5% over the prior year. EBITDA was $1.9 billion, or a 4.5% margin and an improvement over the previous year's EBITDA of  $1.4 billion, or a 3.7% margin.  Expenses were $42.9 billion in fiscal year 2026, a 7.7% increase over the prior year, resulting in an operating loss before special charges of $430 million, or a -1.0% operating margin.

CommonSpirit’s volumes on an adjusted admission basis improved 3.9% in fiscal year 2026 over the previous year, and the acute average length of stay improved from 4.70 to 4.61 days. Facing inflationary pressures, CommonSpirit’s costs for supplies and purchased services increased 5.6% and 12.6%, respectively, over the previous year.

“Fiscal year 2026 demonstrates clear operational progress. While our EBITDA growth underscores the resilience of our core business, we recognize the persistent headwinds posed by an increasingly complex payer environment and rising costs,” said CommonSpirit CFO Michael P. Browning. “Our focus remains on navigating these external pressures through disciplined cost management and continued clinical innovation.”

In fiscal year 2026, CommonSpirit made significant progress toward propelling key mission and operational initiatives to enhance quality, broaden access to care and ensure financial viability, including:

  • Clinical excellence: 86% of eligible CommonSpirit hospitals earned an ‘A’ or ‘B’ grade in Leapfrog Group’s spring 2026 Hospital Safety Report compared to 59% of hospitals nationwide; and 69% of CommonSpirit’s full-service acute care hospitals were recognized among the U.S. News & World Report’s 2026-2027 Best Hospitals.

  • Patient experience: CommonSpirit’s patient experience continues to improve with an average Provider Star Rating of 4.8 and a 70.5 Net Promoter Score. The launch of enhanced online scheduling tools in several markets generated over 32,000 booked appointments in fiscal year 2026.

  • Workforce retention: Recognized as a Forbes Dream Employer for both 2025 and 2026, CommonSpirit is focused on team member engagement and culture. New hire retention rates and overall turnover rates for nurses and the entire organization have improved through fiscal year 2026.

  • Care Innovation: CommonSpirit was named one of America’s Innovative Companies in 2026 by Forbes Magazine for measurable results with its Virtually Integrated Care program, improving access and patient safety through Care Base, a virtual hospital model, robotic process automation for cancer screening and an internally developed Emergency Department Operations Dashboard, all of which has resulted in a better patient experience and improved workflows for team members.

“Our financial performance serves as the foundation for the care we provide to our communities. Seeing our investments in clinical excellence and workforce retention translate into industry-leading safety grades and improved patient experience scores is a testament to the dedication of our clinicians and team members,” added Browning. “With fiscal year 2027 well underway, we are committed to advancing a sustainable ministry that provides high-quality, innovative care for generations to come.”
