Saint Joseph Health Neurology Team Welcomes Deana Underwood, APRN

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Feb. 13, 2026) – Saint Joseph Health welcomes Deana Underwood, APRN, to Saint Joseph Medical Group – Neurology in Lexington. Through several different career paths, Underwood feels like she has found her calling.

“I always had a desire to help people,” she said. “I had gone to school and was working in human resources, but I didn’t feel like I was helping people the way I wanted to, so I went into nursing.

Underwood began her nursing career at Saint Joseph Hospital in 2010. After seven years serving at the bedside at Saint Joseph and then at UK HealthCare, she decided to travel a new path as a nurse practitioner.

“I wanted to be able to build more of a relationship with the patient beyond seeing them in the hospital,” Underwood said. While working as an APRN in primary care for six years, she noticed a long wait for patients needing neurological care. “The brain is fascinating,” she said. “I thought, where can I go in  medicine that needs people and I feel passionate about … and that’s neurology.”

She is happy to join Saint Joseph Health because of its strong mission and values. “I like that Saint Joseph sees people as people, as a whole person, not just a particular disease,” she said. “I view patient care as teamwork between me and the patient. I have the information they need; they are experts on themselves. Working together, we can come up with a plan that can help them.”

Underwood earned her Bachelor of Science in nursing at Eastern Kentucky University in 2009 and her Master of Science, family nurse practitioner, from EKU in 2017.

Underwood is part of a big family that includes 35 nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews. In her spare time, she loves being the “fun aunt” with the kids, crocheting and kayaking.
