At St. Luke’s Health – Lakeside Hospital, amongst the whirring of medical equipment and the quiet hum of healing, there’s a consistent beacon of calm and compassion: Kirk Wheeler.

Affectionately known as "Captain Kirk" – a signature he proudly uses in his correspondence – Kirk isn't just one of two MRI technologists; he’s a vital force in making a daunting experience a little less intimidating, one smile and honest conversation at a time.

For 10 years, Kirk has been a reassuring presence for outpatient MRI patients daily. His professional journey began in 1999, demonstrating undeniable expertise. His genuine approach truly stands out.

When asked what he loves about working for St. Luke’s Health, Kirk doesn't hesitate. "Making people feel better about an exam," he explains. He knows that an MRI can be a source of anxiety, and his mission, once a patient is in his care, is to gently guide them through. This involves a masterful blend of calm conversation, well-placed jokes, and an unwavering commitment to bringing levity and compassion into the room.

Kirk embodies humankindness by being genuinely true and honest. He believes in demystifying the process, confronting fear with facts. "I won't fib about the experience," he states, emphasizing the importance of truthfulness in building trust. For Kirk, information is power, and by clearly communicating what to expect, he removes the fear of the unknown, empowering patients to face their studies together.

Kirk attributes his success to this authentic honesty and his ability to connect. "I look patients in the eye," he shares. "If you can communicate clearly with the patient, that’s the key." He sees himself as a guide, teaching and showing patients through what can be a bewildering experience.

Kirk proudly reflects on his career, expressing deep appreciation for St. Luke’s Health. "Ever since I started in medicine; I’ve been so proud to work for St. Luke’s Health – it’s an organization I’m very proud of.The level of historical expertise for this organization is truly exceptional – it’s top-tier, impressive to work here."

A self-proclaimed "big reader," Kirk always has a book open, delving into history, historical fiction, spy novels, fantasy and science fiction. His love for reading, nurtured since childhood, allows him to get lost in stories and provides rich context for his European adventures. Perhaps it's this intellectual curiosity and deep-seated empathy that fuels his compassionate approach, finding kinship in the universal human experience.

Much like the Starship Enterprise he’s playfully named after, Captain Kirk, with his calm demeanor and unwavering commitment to humankindness, guides patients through uncharted territories with skill, honesty and a genuine desire to make a difference.

At St. Luke’s Health – Lakeside, he exemplifies what it means to truly care, leaving behind not just scan results, but a trail of comfort and reassurance.
