Seamless Care: Claude Hampton's Story

93-year-old Claude Hampton experienced unparalleled emergency care at St. Luke's Health – The Vintage Hospital. Discover his seamless, compassionate journey.

Claude Hampton, at 93 years old, lived a life of service and dedication. He spent two decades as an anesthetist in the United States Air Force, followed by sixteen years in private practice. His career that had taken him across the country.

A mere year and a half prior, he moved  to Houston, leaving behind his life in New Mexico. Now, he navigated new surroundings, new doctors and a new pace of life. These experiences, at his age, could often feel daunting. Fortunately, his new home placed him just around the corner from St. Luke's Health – The Vintage Hospital.

Emergency Care Experience

It was in the early hours of an October morning when the unexpected happened. Claude fell. The EMS team, swift and efficient, brought him to St. Luke's Health – The Vintage Hospital. His daughter, Linda Hampton, received the call, a familiar pang of anxiety accompanying the news. She and her husband rushed to the hospital, their minds already churning with worries about paperwork, long waits and the impersonal nature of emergency care.

However, from the moment they arrived, their fears began to dissipate. Claude had already been processed through the ER. This was a testament to the hospital’s efficiency. But it was the manner in which everything was handled that truly left an impression.

Linda recalled, "The kindness and thoughtfulness through the process made everyone so comfortable." There was a palpable sense of ease, a smoothness to the process that "alleviated [her] worries about the process."

Instead of navigating a maze of bureaucracy, they were met with genuine concern: Such kindness and concern of how we can help. The dreaded paperwork and red tape simply wasn't there. It was replaced by a streamlined approach aimed at getting them reconnected.

Compassionate Hospital Staff

The small gestures resonated deeply. Warm blankets for Claude, and even one offered to Linda to ward off the chill of the hospital. "Little things made such a big difference." Every staff member who passed by, regardless of their role, paused to ask if anything was needed. Linda felt consistently kept up to date on what was happening,  She never felt forgotten. For Claude, a seasoned medical professional himself, the staff’s meticulous approach to explaining the rationale and results of all tests was particularly appreciated.

While no broken bones were found, Claude was significantly bruised and disoriented from the fall. This necessitated two separate hospital visits. During both, a common theme emerged: the feeling of being truly valued. Claude, ever the connoisseur of comfort, even remarked that "even the hospital food was delicious!"

Despite his case not being urgent,  he and Linda felt valued and  important. The staff, without exception, was never in a rush or dismissive. Instead, all staff were engaged, even taking the time to ask Claude questions about his past career in medicine, a gesture that acknowledged his rich history and experience.

The team's very patient and understanding demeanor with everyone involved was a true comfort, bridging the gap between medical expertise and human compassion. It offered a listening ear.

The Road to Rehabilitation

Towards the end of his second visit, a seamless transition was orchestrated to provide necessary rehabilitation services - ensuring his care continued without interruption.

After about two to three weeks of dedicated rehabilitation, Claude was back on his feet - now with the assistance of a walker. Today, Claude is feeling good.

Linda reflected on the experience with profound gratitude. She says, "We all tend to panic in emergency situations; it was such a positive, professional experience. What could have been a distressing ordeal was transformed by the upbeat and cohesive team at St. Luke's Health – The Vintage Hospital.”
