Young at Heart, Wise in Health

Adults are facing heart problems earlier than ever. Here’s what’s driving the trend — and how to protect your heart now.

Heart issues are no longer limited to older generations. Thomas Troy, MD, Family Medicine physician with Saint Joseph Medical Group – Primary Care in Lexington, said the rise in metabolic diseases — such as Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity — plays a major role.

“These conditions are driven by our lifestyles,” Dr. Troy said. “We’re exercising less, eating more processed foods and consuming more alcohol. All of that increases cardiovascular risk.”

Start Monitoring Early

Dr. Troy recommended that young adults see their primary care provider (PCP) at least once a year for blood pressure, weight and cholesterol checks.

“The best time to start monitoring heart health is before it becomes a problem,” he said. “Taking simple steps to protect your heart now can help protect it for the future.”

Watch Your Numbers

Tracking blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar helps you keep tabs on your health. PCPs usually check these at annual checkups, but depending on your age and risk factors, they may need checking every few years. Knowing your numbers can guide lifestyle choices and early care to prevent serious issues.
