Frequently asked questions

An imaging center is a medical facility that provides diagnostic imaging tests. These tests help physicians identify and monitor health conditions by creating detailed images of the inside of the body. With the information they provide, your care team can make an accurate diagnosis and plan appropriate treatment. Imaging centers are staffed by trained technologists and radiologists who focus on patient safety, comfort and clear results.

Fluoroscopy is a medical imaging technique that uses a continuous X-ray beam to create video-like images of the inside of the body. This method differs from standard X-ray by allowing doctors to see the function and motion of organs, such as swallowing, blood flow or joint movement.

If you're experiencing unexplained pain, discomfort or if your healthcare provider suspects an underlying issue, they may recommend an X-ray. While other imaging tests are used for imaging internal organs, X-rays create images of bones and certain soft tissues. They are commonly used in detecting fractures, assessing the integrity of the skeletal system and visualizing dense structures like teeth and metal implants.

X-ray procedures are typically quick and can be performed on an outpatient basis. The results are available immediately, making them suitable for diagnosing and assessing certain conditions rapidly.

Preparation for an ultrasound depends on the type of examination you are scheduled to receive. For some scans, your doctor may instruct you not to eat or drink for as many as 12 hours before your appointment. For others, you may be asked to drink up to six glasses of water, two hours prior to your exam, and avoid urinating so that your bladder is full when the scan begins.

During your appointment, the technologist will assist you onto the examination table. A transmission gel will be applied to the area of your body that will be examined. A transducer will be moved slowly over the body part being imaged, which may cause slight pressure on the skin. An exam typically takes between 30 and 60 minutes, depending on the part of the body being studied.

Before the imaging begins, a technologist will speak with you about the procedure and answer any questions. Depending on the area of your body to be scanned, you may need to change into a gown or pajamas. After the exam, a board-certified radiologist will review the images and share the results with your ordering physician.

Yes. Our imaging center on Soquel Drive follows strict safety guidelines to ensure exams are performed safely. Our technologists use the lowest radiation dose necessary for X-rays and fluoroscopy. Ultrasound does not use radiation. Your care team will review your medical history to ensure the exam is appropriate for you.

Many imaging exams are covered by insurance, but coverage can vary by plan and test. We recommend checking with your insurance provider for specific coverage details before your appointment.
