Frequently asked questions

An arrhythmia center is a medical facility that specializes in the diagnosis, management and treatment of abnormal heart rhythms, or arrhythmias. At Dignity Health Heart Arrhythmia Center, our cardiologists have training in electrophysiology. They use specialized tools to detect and monitor arrhythmias, create personalized care plans for your unique needs and deliver advanced treatment options.

Electrophysiology is a specialized branch of cardiology that focuses on the heart's electrical system, which controls the rhythm and rate of your heart. Electrophysiologists diagnose and treat arrhythmias. At  Dignity Health Heart Arrhythmia Center, our specialists use tools like electrocardiograms and catheters to analyze and monitor electrical signals within the heart.

Our electrophysiologists treat conditions affecting the heart’s electrical system. We have experience in arrhythmias, or irregular heartbeats, caused by underlying heart conditions such as coronary artery disease, valvular heart disease, adult congenital heart disease and cardiomyopathy.

Our team has specific expertise in various types of arrhythmias, some of which can become life-threatening. The conditions we treat include:

We diagnose arrhythmias through specialized tests that monitor heart activity. They include:

  • Echocardiograms (Echo): These are ultrasound tests that use high-frequency sound waves to get detailed images of the heart while it is functioning. This can show the shape of the heart, how the valves are functioning and the size of the heart chambers.

  • Electrophysiology (EP) study: This test checks the electrical activity of the heart. Catheters with sensors on the ends are placed in at least three areas of the heart. These sensors send electrical signals to the heart, and the heart's electrical activity is recorded.

Our cardiac specialists at Dignity Health Heart Arrhythmia Center treat arrhythmias using a range of interventions, including minimally invasive surgical procedures. To restore a normal heart rhythm, they may perform:

  • Ablation, including cryoballoon and radiofrequency with and without 3D mapping

  • Cardioversion

  • Implantation of cardiac devices, such as defibrillators, loop recorders and pacemakers

Our cardiologists use implantable cardiac devices to help restore and maintain a normal heart rhythm. Some common devices include:

  • Implantable cardioverter defibrillators, which help prevent sudden death in patients with known, sustained ventricular tachycardia or fibrillation

  • Loop recorders, which are heart-monitoring devices that continuously record the electrical signals of your heart

  • Permanent pacemakers, which are devices that send small electrical impulses to the heart muscle to maintain a suitable heart rate or to stimulate the lower chambers of the heart
