Insurance acceptedSymptoms of lymphedema include swelling characterized by “pitting” of the skin. Pitting is when the skin is depressed for several seconds and the indentation does not immediately disappear. Other symptoms include heaviness of the limb or affected area or changes in the texture of skin. Some people notice that their jewelry worn on the limb no longer fits or becomes too tight.
As a result of a surgical procedure, radiation and/or lymph node removal, “secondary” lymphedema can occur. The best prognosis for lymphedema includes early detection and management using compression garments.
Those at risk for lymphedema include anyone who has had lymph nodes removed due to breast, head and neck, cervical or prostate cancer, and anyone who has undergone radiation treatments.
Ways to prevent lymphedema include seeing a certified occupational or physical therapist, education and wearing specialized compression garments.
