Dr. John Matthews is a board certified, fellowship trained orthopedic surgeon who serves the Dignity Health Medical Group and Dignity Health Hospitals. He specializes in non-operative and operative sports injuries.
He performs ultrasound guided shoulder, elbow, hip, knee and ankle injections. He performs arthroscopic shoulder, elbow, hip, and knee sports injury reconstructions. He also specializes in Tommy John surgery, Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) reconstruction, and meniscal/cartilage repairs.
Dr. Matthews was born in Iran and raised in Tucson, AZ. He earned a major of BS in Physiology and Minor in Business and Chemistry from University of Arizona. He was awarded the Dean’s List with Distinction. He completed his medical degree at The University of Arizona Medical School, Tucson, AZ while earning the Medical Award of Excellence Grant and Schuele, Voight Hans and Julia, and Samuel Canterman Scholarships. He was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society for top academic performance. He completed his orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Buffalo, in Buffalo, NY. Dr. Matthews was awarded the Kaleida Health and AANA Resident Scholarship Awards. He was assistant team doctor for UB Division 1 Football, Women’s Soccer, and Men’s and Women’s Basketball. Dr. Matthews completed a fellowship in orthopedic sports surgery at the prestigious Thomas Jefferson Rothman Institute, Philadelphia, PA. He was an assistant team physician for the Philadelphia Eagles, Phillies, Fliers and Saint Joseph’s University Division 1 team coverage. He has multiple primary author publications and national presentations in orthopedic sports surgery.
