Our liver disease specialty clinic focuses on providing the highest quality care for your liver condition. To ensure you receive comprehensive care, we partner with your primary care doctor. This team approach allows us to concentrate on your liver health while your primary doctor manages your overall well-being. We believe that clear communication with your referring physician is essential for excellent care and will keep them informed about your treatment plan.
Yes. Our clinic focuses only on liver-related issues. You’ll need a primary care physician for your overall health. We work closely with your doctor to ensure coordinated care.
Start by scheduling an appointment with a hepatologist (liver specialist). If a transplant is deemed appropriate, you'll undergo a comprehensive evaluation to assess your overall health and suitability for surgery.
Once approved, you're added to the national transplant list managed by the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS). Your position is based on factors like your MELD score (which reflects how sick you are), blood type and how long you've been waiting.
Post-surgery, you'll stay in the hospital for monitoring, often starting in the ICU (you are typically in the hospital for 5 - 7 days). Recovery includes managing medications to prevent rejection, regular checkups and lifestyle adjustments.
Following your liver transplant, you'll receive ongoing care from our dedicated transplant team to ensure your new liver stays healthy. Expect weekly appointments for the first month, gradually becoming less frequent. Regular lab work is essential, and additional tests like abdominal scans, ultrasounds or liver biopsies may be needed to monitor your progress.
Most insurance plans, including Medicare and Medicaid, cover liver transplant evaluations and surgeries. It's essential to check with your provider for specific coverage details.
