Neurologists diagnose and manage neurological conditions non-surgically. Neurosurgeons are trained to perform surgical procedures for conditions requiring intervention in the brain, spine or peripheral nerves.

 

Your primary care physician may refer you to a neurosurgeon if you have persistent neurological symptoms such as: 

  • Imaging test showing abnormalities in your brain or spine

  • Numbness or weakness in your limbs

  • Seizures

  • Severe back or neck pain

Your neurosurgeon reviews your medical history, discusses your symptoms and evaluates any imaging studies. They discuss potential treatment options, which may include surgical and nonsurgical approaches.
