Bring a photo ID for yourself, your child’s insurance information, their medication list and any relevant medical records, if available. You may also bring someone who can help provide information about your child’s condition.
When you arrive at the emergency department, we use a process called triage. This helps us quickly assess everyone's condition and identify those with the most urgent needs so we can treat them in the correct order.
From the moment you arrive, you’ll speak with a nurse who will assess your child’s needs and help ensure you receive the most appropriate care as quickly as possible. Patients with life-threatening conditions or severe injury, will be prioritized for immediate care.
We may need to perform tests or procedures to rule out various illnesses. The emergency room offers a range of diagnostic services, including X-rays, CT scans, blood tests and ultrasounds. Some of these tests may require patients to have an empty stomach.
Before undergoing testing, your child may be asked to recall their symptoms and how long they have experienced them. You may also be asked to provide additional information about their medical history. This will help your doctor decide on the best course of action going forward.
We typically share a detailed medical visit summary with you, and (if authorized) with your child’s pediatrician or referring health care provider. This helps keep your child’s care team informed about their emergency department visit and any treatment they may have received, and supports follow-up care if needed.
