Emergency Room - Dignity Health - Methodist Hospital of Sacramento

The Emergency Room at Methodist Hospital of Sacramento provides 24/7 care for a wide range of critical injuries and illnesses. We are one of six Dignity Health hospitals located throughout the Greater Sacramento region that offer comprehensive services, including emergency medicine and diagnostic imaging. Our team includes emergency physicians, physician assistants, nurses, radiologists and laboratory technologists.

If you are more than 14 weeks pregnant or up to six weeks postpartum and have an urgent or emergent pregnancy-related need, our OB Emergency Department (OBED) is here for you. You will be seen by one of our board-certified OB/GYN hospitalists regardless of time, complications or circumstances. Commonly referred to as OB triage, our OBED is where you will go for:

  • Urgent or emergent pregnancy-related issues for patients greater than 14 weeks pregnant
  • Active labor (you will be assessed to determine if it is time to be admitted)
  • Postpartum concerns, up to six weeks

The OBED is located on the 2nd floor of our hospital. Start by checking in at the main ER, where you will be triaged, then moved to the OBED.

From the moment of your arrival, our emergency care team is here to support your care with expertise and humankindness.

Frequently asked questions

The ER is for serious or life-threatening conditions like chest pain, stroke symptoms, difficulty breathing, severe injuries or uncontrollable bleeding. For less severe issues like minor cuts, sprains or colds, urgent care or express primary care may be more appropriate. If you think you may be experiencing a life-threatening emergency, call 911 immediately.

Patients can expect an initial triage assessment to determine the urgency of their condition, followed by a medical evaluation by a provider. Diagnostic testing such as labs, imaging or monitoring may be performed as needed. Treatment is provided based on findings and patients will receive updates on their condition, next steps and discharge or admission plans.

Patients are allowed visitors in accordance with our visitor guidelines, depending on available space and patient volumes.

Patients are seen based on how serious their condition is, not by order of arrival. This process is called triage. A nurse will assess your needs and ensure you receive the most appropriate care quickly. Patients with life-threatening issues, like a heart attack or severe injury, will be prioritized for immediate care.

Bring a photo ID, insurance card and a list of your medications (names, dosages and when you last took them). If you brought your medications, let your nurse know. Any past medical records are also useful. If you need assistance sharing health information, you may want to consider bringing a family member or friend.

Yes. Emergency care is provided regardless of your ability to pay or whether you have insurance. Your health and well-being are important to us, and financial assistance options may also be available.

We typically share a summary of your visit with your primary care provider (PCP) or referring health care provider. This helps keep your care team informed about your emergency department visit and any treatment you may have received, and supports follow-up care if needed.

After your visit, you’ll receive a billing statement. For billing assistance or questions, please call (888) 488-7667.
