The Family Birth Center at St. Bernardine Medical Center offers personalized, expert maternity services. From comprehensive childbirth education to essential postpartum support, our dedicated team prioritizes your safety and individual preferences to ensure the best possible birth experience.

We encourage immediate skin-to-skin contact after delivery to promote essential bonding. If you choose to breastfeed, we provide expert guidance both during your hospital stay and after you return home.

Our OB hospitalists are on-site 24/7, providing immediate, emergency obstetrical care whenever needed. Should your baby require specialized attention, our Level III neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) is equipped to provide premature and ill newborns with the services necessary for them to thrive, grow and develop.

    Our family birth center offers 24/7 labor and delivery support and postpartum care. Whether you’re a first-time or seasoned parent, we help you understand your options and make informed choices.

    Emergency Medicine

    Obstetric emergencies, such as premature labor or placental abruption, need immediate care. Our emergency medicine team and OB hospitalists are available 24/7 to care for you and your baby.

  • Neonatal and Perinatal Medicine
    Neonatal and Perinatal Medicine

    We care for women with high-risk pregnancies, helping them safely deliver their babies. Neonatologists care for ill and premature babies in our Level III NICU.

Frequently asked questions

We offer maternity tours on the first Tuesday of every month. You and a partner will tour our maternal child health units, hear from some of our staff and participate in raffles and giveaways.

The most important item to bring with you is an approved infant car seat. You may also want to pack an outfit for your baby and a receiving blanket. We provide all other necessary items for your baby during your stay, including diapers and blankets. 

However, you are welcome to bring anything that will make your stay more comfortable, including: 

  • Comfortable clothes to wear home (maternity clothes)

  • Driver's license or ID card, insurance card, and pediatrician and OB/GYN contact information

  • Flip-flops

  • Lip balm

  • Nightgowns

  • Nursing bras and nursing pads

  • Personal electronics and chargers

  • Personal toiletries

  • Snacks

  • Swimsuit and a change of clothes for your birth partner

Yes, our three-part series helps you prepare for labor and delivery, understand your medication and intervention options and learn how to breastfeed and care for your new baby. The class is $20 per couple for all three classes.

Under your provider's guidance, we support all birthing options and honor your birth plan when possible. Speak with your care team about your preferences for pain management, birthing positions and who you’d like in the room during delivery. 

Birthing options include:

  • Natural childbirth (without pain medication)

  • Vaginal birth

  • Cesarean birth

Our highly functional birthing beds convert to an upright position, allowing gravity to help you deliver your baby vaginally.

Surgical suites are available to accommodate planned and emergency cesarean sections.

 

St. Bernardine Medical Center offers 24/7 obstetric and gynecological services with the OB Hospitalist Group, the industry’s largest dedicated OB/GYN hospitalist provider.

OB hospitalists are on-site at all times, giving you peace of mind that you can get expert obstetric care if your doctor is unavailable or en route. Our board-certified hospitalists are highly skilled and have the expertise and experience to:

 

  • Monitor your labor progress

  • Address any emergency concerns

  • Answer patient and family questions

  • Examine and treat you regardless of time, complication, circumstance or insurance status

 

Yes. Our nurses and lactation consultants are available to help you learn to nurse your baby after delivery.

Our breastfeeding clinic is open Monday to Friday, offering one-on-one guidance to you and your baby. To make an appointment with a lactation consultant, call (909) 881-4420.

Yes, we offer various support groups and safety training to help you feel confident and prepared for your new role as a parent:

  • Embracing Motherhood Support Group: This free group is open to the community and provides support for individuals experiencing mood or anxiety disorders before or after birth

  • Infant and Child CPR Class: Parents and caregivers can learn essential, lifesaving skills in this class. The cost is $10 and it is open to the community

Your baby receives supportive, specialized care in our Level III NICU. Our team provides an environment to promote growth and healing, limiting light and noise when possible. 

You may visit your baby any time and hold them skin-to-skin to promote bonding. We encourage mothers to breastfeed, and we help you and your baby learn together.

Yes. At St. Bernardine Medical Center, we keep mothers and babies together during the hospital stay to encourage bonding opportunities. Skin-to-skin bonding often:

  • Causes your uterus to contract and bleed less

  • Comforts and soothes baby

  • Gives baby better oxygenation and blood sugar levels

  • Promotes feelings of closeness and protectiveness

  • Provides a quiet time for your new family to connect

  • Stabilizes baby’s temperature and vital signs

  • Stimulates milk production and provides the best opportunity to get breastfeeding off to a good start
