Incisions, suture lines and scars are a necessary part of surgery. These lines take many months to fully heal. While there is no guarantee as to what a scar will look like once it has fully healed, there are interventions that can help prevent or minimize scarring.

These include:

  • Scar massage: Using lotion, gently massage your scar three times each day.
  • Topical treatments: For patients with a history of raised or red scars (or keloids), we can recommend anti-scar treatments.
  • Silicone gel sheeting: Your surgeon may recommend a silicone sheeting product to cover your scar if it appears raised or red.
  • Steroid injection: Your surgeon may inject a steroid into your scar every 4–6 weeks.

We offer a comprehensive range of cosmetic and reconstructive breast surgeries at Plastic Surgery – Dignity Health Medical Group in Santa Cruz.

Most insurance plans do not cover cosmetic procedures. These procedures are elective and performed to improve appearance. However, some plastic surgery procedures may be covered if they are considered reconstructive. Reconstructive surgery corrects defects caused by birth disorders, trauma, burns or disease.

If a procedure is deemed medically necessary, a portion or all of the costs may be covered. We recommend contacting your insurance provider directly to understand your specific plan benefits and coverage details. Our team can also help provide the necessary documentation for your insurance claims if the procedure is reconstructive.
