Frequently asked questions

Palliative medicine is specialized care that focuses on you as a whole person, helping you feel better physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. Our palliative care specialists focus on easing your pain and symptoms, improving your quality of life and providing comfort to you and your family.

Anyone living with a serious illness can choose palliative medicine — even while receiving treatment for their condition. Palliative care focuses on easing physical symptoms while supporting your emotional needs, helping you enjoy daily life and activities.

Many people think palliative medicine is only for those who are near the end of life, but that’s not true. You can receive palliative care while you receive treatment for an illness. We care for your body, mind and spirit — helping to relieve pain, symptoms and stress.

While many patients are referred to our program by their physician, you or a family member can also request care from our team. To speak to a member of the Yavapai Regional Medical Group Palliative Medicine team, please call (928) 775-5567.

At YRMC Palliative Medicine, we understand that living with a serious illness presents unique challenges. Our comprehensive services are designed to improve your quality of life by addressing your physical, emotional, and practical needs. Here’s how we can support you:

  • Expert symptom management: We specialize in addressing the additional symptoms often experienced by individuals with chronic illnesses, such as breathing difficulties, fatigue, depression, insomnia, constipation or diarrhea. Our team will thoroughly assess your specific symptoms and develop a personalized plan to effectively manage them, helping you feel more comfortable.
  • Emotional and spiritual support: We believe that emotional well-being is just as vital as physical treatment. Our team provides compassionate emotional and spiritual support to both the patient and their family members or loved ones. We help you cope with the challenges of illness and empower you to maintain your daily activities as much as possible.
  • Comprehensive education and information: Facing a serious illness often brings many questions. Our palliative medicine team is here to provide clear and compassionate answers to your questions, as well as those from your loved ones. We are knowledgeable about available medications, treatments, and other relevant information to help you make informed decisions.

Our team assesses your condition and evaluates any medications you’re taking. We work with you to create a treatment plan tailored to your symptoms and health goals. We monitor your pain and comfort levels and adjust your medications as needed to keep you comfortable.

Planning for future medical care is a crucial step. We offer resources and guidance on advance directives, such as a living will, a health care proxy and durable power of attorney. These documents are critical for ensuring your wishes for medical care are properly documented and respected, especially if you reach a point where you can no longer participate in your own care decisions.
