CHICAGO – Aug. 11, 2025 – Quality and patient safety throughout CommonSpirit Health, one of the nation’s largest nonprofit health systems, exceeded the national average in the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) 2025 Overall Hospital Quality Star Ratings, released last week.
The ratings, ranging from 1 to 5 stars, summarize a hospital's performance across 46 quality measures in five domains: Mortality, Safety of Care, Readmission, Patient Experience, and Timely and Effective Care; and are designed to help patients and families make informed health care decisions based on standardized quality measures.
"Providing safe, high-quality care is our highest priority at CommonSpirit," said Thomas McGinn, MD, MPH, Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Physician Executive Officer. "We are grateful to our dedicated caregivers who consistently prioritize patient safety and deliver exceptional, high-quality care every single day. Their unwavering commitment is the cornerstone of our mission to foster healthier communities and ensure the well-being of every individual we serve."
CommonSpirit hospitals exceeded national average performance rating in several areas:
Forty-three percent of eligible CommonSpirit hospitals earned four- or five-star ratings compared to the national average of 37%.
CommonSpirit’s average star rating for 2025 is 3.38 compared to the national hospital average of 3.08.
Additionally, 77% percent of eligible CommonSpirit Health hospitals scored better than the national average in the patient safety domain.
“Achieving the highest possible star ratings enables CommonSpirit to demonstrate our commitment to exceptional quality and safety outcomes,” said Phillip Chang, MD, Chief Medical and Quality Officer. “While we are encouraged by these ratings, we remain focused on the implementation of system-wide quality and safety initiatives that will allow us to continuously improve the care we provide.”
The CMS Star ratings are just one measure of a comprehensive patient safety and quality program across CommonSpirit that prioritizes and scales best practices across the health system, which has resulted in CommonSpirit receiving several recent accolades, including:
The John M. Eisenberg Patient Safety and Quality Award in National Level Innovation in Patient Safety and Quality
Finalist recognition in the American Hospital Association’s AHA Quest for Quality Prize for focusing on community partnerships, patient safety and family involvement
Over half of CommonSpirit’s full-service acute care hospitals were recognized in US News & World Report’s 2025-2026 Best Hospitals
