CHICAGO – Oct. 19, 2026 – CommonSpirit Health, one of the nation’s largest nonprofit health systems, continues to drive excellence in clinical care across its national footprint by fostering a unified approach to patient safety and quality.
"CommonSpirit is committed to patient safety, quality and clinical excellence," said Dr. Thomas McGinn, SEVP, Chief Physician Executive Officer at CommonSpirit Health. "We’re grateful for our quality and safety teams, who work tirelessly to ensure that every patient in every location receives the highest standard of care."
In 2026, CommonSpirit advanced quality and safety initiatives to create a more seamless and responsive environment for patients, delivering real-world results in key clinical areas, including:
Cancer care: Reduced time from breast biopsy to surgery, helping cancer patients get treatment sooner.
Heart care: Faster time to treatment for heart attack patients, providing life-saving care as quickly as possible
Maternal mental health care: Expanded maternal mental health screenings for postpartum mood and anxiety disorders to support new mothers, and launched a Maternal Mental Health Community Health Worker Pilot Program to help patients access the support they need.
Care innovation: Accelerated adoption of evidence-based clinical practices to shorten the time between research and bedside application, improving care for nearly half a million patients.
CommonSpirit’s dedication to quality is reflected in its strong performance across national safety benchmarks:
Leapfrog Hospital Safety: 82% of CommonSpirit sites achieved an 'A' or 'B' grade in Leapfrog’s spring 2026 hospital safety grades.
CMS Star Ratings: For the sixth year in a row, CommonSpirit exceeded the national average for CMS Star Ratings, with 56% of hospitals earning 4 or 5 stars, compared to the national average of 42%.
US News & World Report: 61 acute care CommonSpirit hospitals were recognized by U.S. News & World Report.
"Our achievements rely entirely on partnering with our dedicated national and local teams," said Dr. Phillip Chang, SVP and Chief Quality Officer at CommonSpirit Health. "While we take pride in these results, we’re already looking ahead. We are doubling down on our efforts to standardize care, innovate through technology, and address health disparities to ensure our commitment to quality truly leaves no one behind."
