CHICAGO – May 6, 2026 – CommonSpirit Health, one of the nation's largest nonprofit health systems, has again exceeded the national average in Leapfrog’s spring 2026 Hospital Safety Grades, with 86% percent of eligible CommonSpirit hospitals receiving an A or B grade, compared to the national average of 59%.
"Providing safe, high-quality care remains our highest priority at CommonSpirit," said Dr. Thomas McGinn, SEVP and chief physician executive officer at CommonSpirit. "This recognition from The Leapfrog Group is another testament to the skill, dedication, and hard work of our incredible teams. While we continue to do well, we strive to become even better. We’ll continue to build upon this success to further elevate the care we provide.”
Leapfrog’s grading system is based on 22 national performance measures and encompasses critical aspects of hospital performance, including how well care is delivered, patient experience scores, quality and safety outcomes such as Patient Safety Indicators (PSI) and hospital-acquired infections (HAI). The scores are converted to one of five letter grades, ranging from “A” to “F”.
“While we're incredibly proud of this recognition, it also fuels our ongoing commitment to even greater excellence," said Dr. Phillip Chang, CommonSpirit’s chief medical and quality officer . "We’ll use these insights to identify areas for further advancement, ensuring that we continuously elevate the safety and quality of care provided across all our facilities.”
Leapfrog’s spring 2026 safety grades are just one measure of a comprehensive patient safety and quality program across CommonSpirit that prioritizes and scales best practices. CommonSpirit’s consistent, evidence-based approach to quality and safety has resulted in several recent accolades, including:
The 2024 John M. Eisenberg Patient Safety and Quality Award for National Level Innovation in Patient Safety and Quality
The 2025 ATA Nexus Leadership Award for its Virtual Integrated Care model, revolutionizing telemedicine with innovation and impact.
Finalist recognition for the American Hospital Association’s AHA Quest for Quality Prize, noting exceptional healthcare leadership and innovation in improving quality and advancing health in America’s communities.
Over half of CommonSpirit’s full-service acute care hospitals were recognized among the nation’s best by U.S. News & World Report’s 2025-2026 Best Hospitals.
