The St. Luke's Health – Brazosport Hospital volunteer organization has provided patient services since 1958 and has grown immensely, from its origin of volunteers sitting with children in the pediatric ward to now serving in various areas throughout the hospital. The volunteers, who vary in age, make a significant positive impact on the lives of both patients and staff.

There are a variety of volunteer assignments including:

  • Helping visitors find the right gift item in our gift shop
  • Delivering newspapers or flowers to our patients
  • Answering questions and greeting customers at the information desk
  • Offering refreshments to our patients and their families
  • Keeping family members informed during surgery
  • Assisting customers and patients in the emergency waiting room area
  • Assisting with any special projects such as blood drives, community flu shot clinics and community education programs

There is a four-step process to becoming a volunteer at Brazosport Hospital:

  1. Schedule a personal interview with the membership chairman
  2. Attend a 4–hour volunteer orientation program
  3. Complete a required background check, health screening and tuberculosis skin test which is free of charge
  4. Complete three training sessions in the assigned area

Adult volunteers

Adult volunteers must commit to volunteer a minimum of six hours per month. The greatest benefit of volunteering at St. Luke's Health Brazosport is the personal satisfaction that comes from making a patient’s stay a little easier. Additional benefits include free parking and access to free educational programs and seminars.

Junior volunteers

The Junior Volunteer Program at Brazosport Hospital gives teens ages 14–18 a chance to serve in different departments throughout the hospital. Volunteers play an important role in supporting patients, families, and staff, while building valuable experience and confidence.

Volunteers are assigned to various areas of the hospital based on need each year. All applicants will go through an interview process. Those selected will be contacted and must attend a mandatory orientation in June.

To participate, junior volunteers must commit to at least six hours of service each month.
