 The National Institute of Health’s criteria for weight loss surgery are:

• BMI of 35 or greater with one or more obesity-related health conditions

• 100 pounds or more above ideal body weight or a BMI of 40 or above

• Certain obesity-related health conditions, such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea and joint problems

• Psychological assessment to help support realistic expectations and mental preparedness for the procedure and lifestyle changes

Yes. The Dignity Health Westgate Clinic offers a virtual bariatric support group for clinic patients. The group provides a space to connect with others who are also working toward weight loss under medical guidance. Participants can share experiences, discuss challenges, celebrate progress and support one another throughout their journey.

Meetings are held on Zoom on the second Wednesday of each month from 6–7 p.m. Participation is limited to bariatric patients of the Westgate clinic. For registration, please call (602) 406-0260.
