The Robert A Grimm Children's Pavilion for Emergency Services at Memorial Hospital is the only dedicated pediatric emergency department between Los Angeles and Madera, serving patients across Kern County and the surrounding region. We provide 24/7 specialized care for children and newborns, for needs ranging from urgent to critical. Beyond the emergency department, our patients have access to additional pediatric services at the Lauren Small Children's Center, including the Bolthouse Family Pediatric Department, pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) and neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). When every moment matters, our emergency team is here to support your care needs. We offer prompt evaluation and treatment, including tests, stabilization and referrals, when necessary. For those needing additional care, we help connect you with on-call specialists and coordinate admission to the hospital when needed, with on-campus lodging options available for eligible families through the Bakersfield Ronald McDonald House.
We accept many major insurance plans. Emergency care is provided regardless of your ability to pay or whether you have insurance, and financial assistance options may be available.
A pediatric emergency department is for serious or life-threatening conditions involving young patients. This includes difficulty breathing, severe injuries, uncontrollable bleeding or symptoms of a serious illness. For less severe issues like minor cuts, sprains or colds, urgent care may be more appropriate. If you think your child may be experiencing a life-threatening emergency, call 911 immediately.
Our pediatric ER treats a wide range of emergency conditions, from broken bones to serious accidents and life-threatening injuries. We have specialized teams available to evaluate and treat your child when prompt care is needed.
No, an appointment is not needed. Our ER is open 24/7 for emergencies. Upon arrival, please use the separate, clearly marked ER entrance located off of San Dimas Street.
Patients are seen based on how serious their condition is, not by order of arrival. This process is called triage. From the moment you arrive, you’ll speak with a nurse who will assess your child’s needs and help ensure you receive the most appropriate care as quickly as possible. Patients with life-threatening conditions, such as a severe asthma attack or major trauma, will be prioritized for immediate care.
Bring a photo ID for yourself, your child’s insurance card, their medication list and any relevant medical records, if available. You may also bring someone who can help provide information about your child’s condition.
We typically share a summary of your visit with your child’s pediatrician or referring health care provider. This helps keep your child’s care team informed about their emergency department visit and any treatment they may have received, and supports follow-up care if needed.
Yes. Emergency care is provided regardless of your ability to pay or whether you or your child have insurance. Your child’s health and well-being are important to us, and financial assistance options may also be available.
