The Family Birth Center at Dignity Health at California Hospital Medical Center provides comprehensive care, comfort and support to families welcoming a new baby. Our 28 private postpartum rooms give you and your baby a comfortable space to rest and bond after birth. 

Our maternity services include private triage, labor and delivery care, breastfeeding education and a Level III neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) for babies who need extra care and monitoring.

Under the guidance of your obstetrician or certified nurse-midwife, we proudly support all birthing options, including:

  • Natural childbirth (without pain medication)

  • Vaginal birth

  • Vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC)

    Through our Welcome Baby program, all parents who deliver at California Hospital receive a postpartum hospital visit, screenings, breastfeeding support and home visits until your baby is nine months old.

    Your baby may spend time in our Level III NICU if they are premature or critically ill. Our 24 private NICU rooms feature advanced technology in a protective setting to help your baby grow.

Yes, you may take a tour of our family birth center and meet some of our team. We offer tours in Spanish on Wednesdays at 10 a.m. and in English on Thursdays at 10 a.m.

Yes, we welcome your chosen support people to be present during labor and delivery. After your baby is born, you may have visitors in your postpartum recovery room.

Please discuss your visitor preferences with your care team so that we can support a comfortable, safe environment for you and your new baby.

Yes, our bilingual, mother-baby-trained nurses offer 24/7 breastfeeding support to new mothers. We help you feel comfortable nursing your baby before you leave the hospital. We can also refer you to educational materials and classes to help you continue your breastfeeding journey with confidence.

As a Level III NICU, we can care for premature and critically ill babies, including those with birth defects, heart conditions and breathing problems. Our 24-bed unit features:

  • Private rooms

  • Advanced technology and monitoring equipment

  • 24/7 expert neonatal care

  • Comprehensive emotional and educational support for parents

Our private rooms feature a NICU hybrid device combining an incubator and radiant warmer. These infant beds give our team quick access to your baby in an emergency, while creating a safe, controlled environment for your little one to grow and develop. 

The NICU is open to visitors 24/7, but please speak with your baby's care team about specific visitation guidelines.

All women who give birth at California Hospital may receive optional support services from the Welcome Baby program. As a program participant, you receive personalized services from a registered nurse and parent coach, including:

  • A postpartum hospital visit

  • Maternal and newborn screenings

  • Breastfeeding support

  • Home visits until your baby is nine months old

Yes. At California Hospital Medical Center, we keep mothers and babies together during the hospital stay to encourage bonding opportunities. Skin-to-skin bonding often:

  • Causes your uterus to contract and bleed less

  • Comforts and soothes baby

  • Gives baby better oxygenation and blood sugar levels

  • Promotes feelings of closeness and protectiveness

  • Provides a quiet time for your new family to connect

  • Stabilizes baby’s temperature and vital signs

  • Stimulates milk production and provides the best opportunity to get breastfeeding off to a good start
